HAIR CONDITION

General health and state of scalp usually dictate strength and health of the hair. Healthy hair is pliant and smooth surfaced. It has a faint coating of sebum, remains smooth when wet. Scalp is free of flakes and slightly oily.

Dry hair is poor, brittle hair, sometimes split at the ends or throughout its length. It lacks elasticity, breaking off when stretched. Scalp would have dry, powdery flakes. Often associated with dry skin types. The main causes are natural, wear and tear or mechanical damage and chemical damage. The usual culprit is insufficient moisture level in the cortex or lack of sebum flow along the hair shaft. This can be a hereditary tendency, or part of the aging process. As a symptom of poor health, dry hair and perhaps dry scalp could result from hormonal imbalance as well as from emotional problems or poor diet.

Greasy hair is often accompanied by spots on forehead, nose and oily scalp and becomes oily a day after washing. When sebaceous glands are overactive hair becomes lank a day after washing. The cause is often glandular, and the condition is prevalent in adolescence when excess oil may well be seen round the forehead and could include a spotty skin. Fatty foots, spicy dishes and hot, strong tea and coffee, which are stimulants, all increase the activity of the sebaceous glands.
