SAUDI ARABIA

SAUDI ARABIAN DRESSING

Saudi Arabian dress is strongly symbolic, representing the people's ties to the land, the past and to Islam.

The predominantly loose, flowing garments reflect the practicalities of life in a desert country as well as Islam's emphasis on keeping it all covered up. Traditionally, men usually wear an ankle-length shirt woven from wool or cotton (known as a thawb), with a ghutra (a large square of cotton held in place by a cord coil) worn on the head. For those rare days when it gets a bit chilly, Saudi men chuck a camel-hair cloak (bisht) over the top. Women's clothes are decorated with tribal motifs, coins, sequins, metallic thread and appliques. Unfortunately, only their family gets to see them in all their glory, as Saudi women must wear a long black coat (abaya) and veil (niqab) when they leave the house, to protect their modesty.

ABOUT HAIR

Each strand consists of three layers: cuticle, cortex and medulla.
The cuticle is the top layer of hair. Like the skin, it is made up of a protein called keratin. It is transparent but very strong. It is layered fish-like scales and helps the cuticle protect the next layer. These scales can have as many as 7 overlapping strata, or as few as 3, bound together with a putty like substance. The cuticle reflects light, giving the hair its luster. If the cuticle is damaged, hair is dull and lacks luster.
The cortex is the thickest part of the hair strands and makes up more than 75% of the hair, providing strength and elasticity.

HAIRDRESSERS WEEK

9 MAY - 15 MAY

In an effort to promote appreciation for hairdressers around the world, let's promoting 9th May to 15th May in every year as Hairdressers Week.

Hard-working professionals in many other fields are already recognized annually with a day, a week or even a month officially designated for them. For instance teachers, nurses, and even

UNITE HAIRDRESSERS!
secretaries are all honored at certain times of the year for their contribution to society. They are all deserving of this recognition and so too are hairdressers, the unsung heroes behind the scene who strive to make people look their best.

Act now and be a small part of history as we make our mark on the calendars of the world so that hairdressers can finally earn the recognition and respect of the public.
