AHA to recognize, honor, and reward exemplary skill & talent.

By Marie Carisa U. Ordinario Culling from the punk hair fashion of the ’80s and a little from the afro style of the ’70s, Schwarzkopf Professional, one of the leading hair care companies in the world, and Hair Impressions, a Malaysian-based hairstyling team, paraded the latest hairstyle collection for 2002-2003 last Oct. 15 at the Grand Ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Former Philippine Hairdresser of the Year Nikki Bacay whips up this Avant-Garde hairstyle during the special hair show of Schwarzkopf’s Philippine Hairdressing Awards 2002

Twenty models walked down the ramp modeling not only the latest in the new hairstyle lineup of Schwarzkopf but also strutting sexy almost revealing hip-hop clothes.

Known for their cutting-edge and trend-setting hairstyling techniques, Hair Impression’s Denny Phang, Patsy Tai, and Simon Kim even gave on-the-spot hairstyling to six models while they posed.

The hairstylists also took turns in giving hairstyle makeovers to three female models within or in less than 15 minutes. Though the hairstyles were more of the layered and commercial type, the general look of the models after the session was still very unique and quite futuristic.

To give the layered look some spice in some models, the hair stylists made the back portions of the hair design stand up either by teasing, by putting Schwarzkopf spray net, or both. Most of the hairstyles were also colored or had streaks of blue, green, red, and other common rave hairstyle colors.

Meanwhile, eight hairdressers from all over the country bagged the top prizes and earned a chance to vie for the top awards in the Asia Hairdressing Awards (AHA) in Hong Kong next year during the 3rd Philippine Hairdressing Awards (PHA) sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.

Hairdressers Danny Katalbas, Lourd Ryan Ramos, Joseph Claravall, and Glenn Roxas from Emphasis Salon in Rockwell, won in the Creative Salon Team category; up and coming hairdresser Jayson Bañares of Cris Estalilla Salon in Taytay, Rizal bagged the best Young Artist award; Katalbas also won the best Avant-Garde hair design; John Magno of Saga Salon in Quezon City for the Best in the Men’s Hairstyle category; Marjurie Montuya of David’s Salon Pampanga for the Best in Commercial Style category; and Katalbas as the Philippine Hairdresser of the Year.

There were more than a hundred participants who submitted photos of their works for the categories they competed in. However, only 24 qualified for the finals.

The photos the contestants submitted were judged by no less than Preview editor-in-chief Pauline Sauco-Juan, ramp and commercial model Abbygale Arenas, ace photographer Jun de Leon, and veteran hairdressers Angelo Justin and Propaganda’s Alex Carbonell.

The hairstyles that qualified in the finals are among the best that I have seen in the world, said Schwarzkopf Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Tony Hasham.

Meanwhile, in addition, according to Atty. Cora del Rosario, general manager of Top Style Marketing, Inc., the licensee of Schwarzkopf, there were more entries this year, compared to the entries two years ago (the contest is held every other year).

This year, we are very proud to showcase all the entries during the Gala Night so that all our guests can fully appreciate the artistry of all those who submitted to the PHA 2002 competition, she said.

Aside from representing the country in the AHA next year, the winners also received trophies and travel vouchers worth P10,000 each while the Philippine Hairdresser of the Year got an additional travel voucher of P15,000 plus a grand trophy.

The PHA was launched by Schwarzkopf in 1998 together with the AHA to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Schwarzkopf in the industry to recognize, honor, and reward exemplary skill and talent in the industry paying tribute to personal achievement, creativity and artistic passion.
