May 6, 2002 By DAVID W. HILL BEE TEAM LEADER If you're a believer that good things come in small packages, there's a little hair salon in town that's big on styles.
Located in McHenry Village at 1700 McHenry Ave. in Modesto, Younique Hair occupies a small free-standing building in parking lot along Briggsmore Avenue.
Owner Trish Brown has transformed the space into a comfortable spot from which she can transform her clients. Brown, a color specialist, and Jennifer Ferro deliver the latest in hairstyles and also do makeup.
After 16 years at other shops, Brown decided it was time cut loose and open her own. But if you can't make it to Brown's cozy little place, she and Ferro will hit the road for weddings and such -- have blow dryer, will travel.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday or by appointment. For more information, call 523-2887. See you there. I'll be the guy trying to convince them they can trim out my gray hair -- without using shaving cream and a razor.
Jeanne Askew started selling her fashions at craft fairs and special events. After years of building a loyal following, Askew has kicked her business into a higher gear with the opening of High Velocity in the Galleria Palms shopping center.
Owned by Askew and husband Keith, the store at Coffee Road and Sylvan Avenue features both men's and women's fashions. Besides linen shirts, suits and dresses, shoppers will find jewelry, other accessories and eventually even shoes. What sets this shop apart are the fashions from India, Africa, Indonesia and other parts of the world that were so popular with crowds at Modesto's International Festival and other events -- shop locally, buy globally.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 579-9088. Askew still plans on selling her fashions at special events to get the word out about High Velocity -- there's just no slowing her down.
Joe and Wanda Sai are cleaning up. Their business, The Maids Home Services franchise in Modesto, has grown so much that the couple had to move to bigger offices at 1223 N. Seventh St. The pair started the business in 1996 with five employees and one of the chain's signature yellow cars. Today, the franchise employs 27 and has six of the distinctive vehicles -- in this case, when you've got that much yellow, you're in the black.
The Maids use a 22-step process designed to ensure healthy, thorough and quality cleaning -- I know a college student who ought to put their number on speed dial. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 579-9290. The Modesto franchise also covers Salida, Ripon, Oakdale, Riverbank and Turlock.
Joe Sai attributes its success to the increase in two-income households and the rising number of folks who can no longer clean their own homes. If you include teen-agers in the latter group, the growth potential is endless.
Sports fans of all stripes have another place to cheer about when it comes to team apparel. Their favorite team's train has arrived at the Sports Station in Modesto's Vintage Faire Mall. It took over the old Pro Sportsworld space near Sears -- it was a straight trade, no players to be named later.
Sports Station, according to general manager Michael Britt, has what the dedicated fan needs to show their team spirit: jerseys, hats and just about anything else with a logo on it -- black shoulder pads with silver spikes?
The Station is open during regular mall hours. For more information, call 548-0855. By the way, Sports Station also does custom orders and layaways -- way cool. How about a red and gold cheese and wine serving set? Nevermind, I'll stick with the spikes. It's a style thing.
