Top wig maker arrested for tax evasion.
May 08, 2002 By Avi Shmoul Wig maker and hair stylist for the stars, Eli Cohen, has been arrested for allegedly failing to pay some NIS 4 million in taxes over the past five years. Haifa Magistrates' Court Judge Kamal Hir yesterday ordered Cohen set bail at NIS 1 million after Cohen confessed to tax investigators.
Cohen, 46, owns a wig factory in China that employs 250 workers, an Israeli company that imports wigs, and two hair salons in Ramat Gan and Hadera. Among his clients are top Israeli models, celebrities and beauty queens.
According to tax investigators, Cohen failed to record millions of shekels in revenues from his clients in Israel and transferred this money to Ukraine, where it was used to purchase natural hair. Some of the hair product was then shipped directly to China, while some was routed via Israel. Cohen allegedly made cash payments to the wig manufacturer in China during his monthly visits.
Over 100 unrecorded checks and cash were found in Cohen's salons and home. Cohen admitted he had received these checks "under the table."
In addition to the court's bail order and a prohibition on travel abroad, the tax authorities have also placed a lien on Cohen's home in Binyamina, which is valued at around $1 million.
The tax authorities have recently upped their pursuit of tax evaders
